Textures and Time

Art on the Square was held in Slaton Texas Saturday. It was a beautiful day and nice to be outside enjoying the festivities with friends. I took these photos of a building we walked by on the town square. I was intrigued by the pealing paint, shattered glass, the raveled cloth all adding to the symphony of textures. The passing of time can't be missed with the holiday decals on the window that have aged to blend right in. So this too, evokes dia de los muertos as the passing of time turns everything to colorless crackles.

SOLD!

Dia de los Muertos for 2009 is done and delivered. It was a late night last night, or I should say early morning, when I finished it up. I attempted a lose style. It was a bit hard for me to let the edges be rough and not strive for that quilting perfection. I am cringing a bit now as I look at the ripples in the photos. But it does look better in person. So maybe this is a metaphor for my life as well. I liked leaving raw edges and will incorporate more of this look into future work- and maybe life too. What better subject matter to remind myself that life is short so live it now!

As always, Day of the Dead is one of my favorite exhibits. It will be on display at the Texas Tech International Cultural Center during the Procession on October 30th. The exhibit may be up as early as next week. Hope you can attend if you live in the Lubbock area!

Heaven is organized Art Supplies!

I'm on an organizing spree this week. I can't say "cleaning spree" since there is very little that I am throwing out or giving away. It is just time to get things in order so I can find everything efficiently. I have found several things I had forgotten about. It is so nice!! Ahhhhh!

Tulip Quilting in Progress

This photo is a small section of the quilt and looks like a composition unto itself. It is the section where I have accomplished the most quilting. I am in the middle of machine quilting and so far all is going well. This is such a scary part of the process. So much can go wrong at this point. The wonderful thing about working with fabric, needle and thread is that "stitches gone wrong" can be removed. It takes a while but usually all is not lost.
